Trying to stay off the sandspurs! Or ....
Fort Fisher's Gargoyles

I played hooky from work again! Hey...it was in the mid 70's
We have been playing hooky at Wrightsville Beach so much that I decided for a change today! We went south of the county right past Carolina & Kure beaches all the way to Fort Fisher.
We hadn't gotten very far from the minivan when I noticed Emily limping. I knew exactly what it was!.....Sandspurs!
She let out a yelp when I pulled it out. Then we hadn't gone 10 feet and she got another one. So I picked her up and carried her to the paved walking path.
I don't know how Abigail made it through the "sandspur minefield" but once we were on the paved path she got one......then Emily got another...and it was back and forth like that. I had to pick them up and carry them out of there.
Then I saw a lady and her three legged German Shepard heading out there. I warned her but she kept going. I thought....."what in the hell is that three legged shepard gonna do when it hit's the "Sandspur Minefield"? I couldn't tell if it was limping from just having three legs, or if it got a sandspur? Still don't know...didn't see them anymore?

Well, after pulling out about a half dozen sandspurs out of both dogs feet, I had no problem getting them to pose on objects that were off the ground! So that's the theme behind the photo layout!

Then we went back to Wrightsville Beach and frolicked with the Surfer/Frisbee dogs. I think they enjoyed soaking their sore feet in the surf. We were too busy to take the camera out there!

Tee hee! Everyone plays hooky sometimes! ;)

I actually read your e-mail before reading your blog post. I had to Google "sandspurs". LOL!

I love the photos of the girls. They are soooooooooo pretty! I just want to hug them! I'm sure if they were over here for a play date, they'd certainly tell Chance who the boss is! My mother-in-law's dog runs over from the farm next to ours and she always lets Chance know who the boss is! LOL! Chance just rolls over onto his back and gets all submissive. What a crazy dog! LOL! Silly!

I thought I might have a reader or two that didn't know what a sandspur was, so I hyper-linked the word for a picture and description.

Oh, Emily would definitely try to be the boss if Chance would let her! She thinks she's ten feet tall and bullet proof, except when she gets a sandspur in her footie.

Abigail would be Chance's best buddy. She's just a big tub of fun and likes to play.

I can't for the life of me figure out what you call those things that Ab & Em are sitting on in the first picture? I think they are some gigantic kind of cleat for a large ship, but don't know the technical word?

Thanks for the link. Sandspurs look sort of like foxtails, which dogs in California get in their fur and ears. A real problem when it get in their ears.

How about little dog boots? Then you could empty sand out of ten shoes instead of two.

We have some burs aroud here that we southerners call "Huckleburs" and I've seen long haired dogs come out of a field with them matted all over it's fur.

Jeanna
"Doggie Boots"?

Did you know that Chuck Norris eats sandspurs for breakfast?

Sunshine! I've forgotten what that looks like...

Poor doggies with the sandspurs!! I think you should take a little red wagon next time and pull them around in it. Oh! And videotape it. And post the video. Yeah.

Were you serious about Chuck Norris eating sandspurs for breakfast? Or is this a joke? LOL!

Oh, the doggie boots...My friend uses them on her dog. They're cute little booties you put on your dog's feet to protect them. My friend uses them in the winter so her dog's feet don't get cut on the ice. Chance would never wear them. I've tried putting a sweater on him and he just gives me that "You can't be serious" look! LOL!

We're having a heat wave over here. The local fish wrapper said it was 79 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday and it broke some kind of local record or something!
It feels hotter today! I'm sweating my arse off!

Dan
Yes, I would need a wagon with solid tires too. Those sandspurs will poke right through the el cheapo air filled tires on my dog buggy!

C
Holy moly......you didn't know Chuck Norris eats sanspurs for breakfast? Yes, it's another one of those wild Norris facts/jokes!

I don't think my doggies would wear the booties. That sounds like something you would have to train them to when they are first weaned.

The truth be told; Emily would prefer to freeze than wear the sweater! But she does pretty good with it!

On our farm, we've got loads of those pesky burr bushes. They're like little velcro balls that stick and are hard to come off. Chance always comes home from his excursions with them matted onto his coat. It is so annoying. I'm constantly taking them off. It usually resorts in me cutting them off with a pair of scissors! Argh! It really sucks when they get embedded into his tail and ears. Silly dog. He never learns his lesson.

Ouch, I've never heard of sandspurs. I thought we got all doggy problems out here. I do love your gargoyles though, gargoyles with personality.

Thanks!
You're the first one to mention my gargoyles.

I can't believe they sat on those things long enough for me to get the picture. I just wish I had Ms.mamma's photo skills and camera equipment!

I love how you take your doggies everywhere with you. I have to tell you, I was reading on another blog where someone was ragging on folks who push their dogs around in strollers, and while they were clearly making fun of anorexic blonde Hollywood types with $300 strollers for their yap yap dogs so they can bring them into stores, I had to speak up and say, Hey, my blog friend Jimmy has a stroller for his dogs, because they're old, and that's how he takes them around with him. Another commenter suggested that you leave the girls home.

That ticked me off, and I said, no, they've always gone out with him, why should they have to stay home now? :)

I think she wasn't thinking of how you take them places they might like to go, and was thinking of those people who sneak little dogs into restaurants and malls, but still. Harumph.

Hey, I misjudge people all the time. It's normal for people to make judgements like that until they are in your shoes.

I know there are people out there that use their dog as a wardrobe accessory and they try to be seen!

Not me, I try my best to avoid crowds and prefer solitary walks with them. That's why it is so fun to go to the beach this time of year, and on week days when everybody else is at work or in school.

Thanks for taking up for us!

I probably love my dogs too much and I guess that could be considered a mental sickness in itself. But I'm happy with it and that's all that matters!

Next time I get a sandspur, I'll know whom to call...

Jeanna said...

Don't call Chuck Norris. His humor's so dry, he coughed up the Sahara.

OK.... but don't ask me to rub in the antifungal cream!

Jeanna
Good one......you have Chuck down pat!

I love how THRILLED your dogs look to be posing too. Haaaaaaaahahaha!

Uncivil said...

Steph
They are thrilled anytime they here the words "Load Up". Cause that means they're either getting in my truck or in my minivan and going on an adventure.

I was thinking the same thing as Steph. The girls don't look excited, but I imagine sand spurs will put a kink in anyone's day.

Uncivil said...

Bottleblonde
Oh, I thought Steph was being sarcastic? I guess they thought they were being tortured into posing with the spurs?

Your dogs rock! They just love the camera. They are such naturals at posing!!!

Thanks, and I still love your Twelve favorite list.
I'l have to do my twelve favorite poses with the doggies one day?
